Confessions of a DotA Addict
I am addicted and not yet cured of this disease that keeps eating my time for doing the things I have to do. My day would never be complete without it; I become restless not knowing what to do. I feel that this was the only thing keeping me alive. I spend everything, even when I have nothing to eat anymore. I want to stop this addiction but I can not. I am trying nevertheless my body craved for it. Hearing voices such as “First blood!” and “Godlike!!!” makes me so alive. Killing enemies and having great powers no one has ever imagined. A power that is so strong than any other superhero. You can be a suicide bomber but after you die, you live again or you can be a Greek God like Zeus where you can kill anyone even enemies are not within your reach. You can be a tiny rock that grows as its strength increases and you can be immobilized. How I wish all these would come to reality that I can have zap anything.
This is not about drug addiction or any other thing. What I am is a DotA addict. DotA or Defence of the Ancients is a very popular computer game based on Warcraft. Most of the gaming stations near our school were inflicted with it and so many students and even professionals got addicted to it. From Half-life and Red Alert, this game was way too good. In this game, a player selects a hero from two sides, the Scourge and the Sentinels. Each hero has its own skills including its own weapons, spells and the hero can also collect money as it increases their range of abilities. Every hero has their strengths and weaknesses and improving their levels through killing other heroes and creeps. These creeps help the heroes earn money and there are also neutral creeps located within the map that can supply the hero more money. Having more money means having a much better item for the hero. A player can team up with other players to play as a team with a single objective, to kill the enemy, to destroy the throne. The game ends when the throne is destroyed. During the game, teamwork is important for winning and if one of the players is not that good enough or they feel that there is no hope in winning, the player gets out of the game leaving an unequal number of players. The game still goes on if the rest of the players want to continue it but when one after another player quits playing, the game is a waste of time and players are disappointed. The game starts again, and if that situation happens for a second time, it is not just a waste of time but also a waste of money. Players who gave their heart at the game are frustrated if they do not win. They will play over and over until they will win. Just like me, they are DoTa addicts. I lose track of time just to win the game. I became upset with quitters and players that do not cooperate for winning the game. I keep on playing and playing. I can not live a day without playing it. I am trying to avoid this addiction but once my team mates call for my help, yet I still have more important things to do, I’d be there playing with them. We loved controlling the heroes especially when the hero has the better skill and the best weapon to kill the enemy.
What’s with game that made us addicted to it? It has a high-quality graphics and very easy to learn. The sound effects are so excellent. Some say that this it just a stupid game and deserved to be forgotten. As a DotA addict and a computer science student, I envy the creators the game with such great ability especially by the application of artificial intelligence. In cyber cafes worldwide, most computers flash on DotA. Players scream at each other and sounds effects are ear-splitting. There are competitions and online groups recognized to prize winners with cash. Discussions and reviews about DotA are normally filled with players sharing each others guidelines about the heroes played in the game. They compare each other’s expertise on what the best item to buy for the hero or how to defeat a hero. The game has lots of devotees on all age groups and for some reasons. The game never ends as it keeps on improving adding new features, more heroes and new items. —PIYOZ—
